It turns out these are both copies of an image by Johann Peter Hasenclever, Der Dudelsackpfeifer (The bagpiper) 1835. 42 cm x 38.1/2 cm. According to Ernst Schmidt; "I have a good black and white photograph and a description of the colours from a 1919 exhibition catalogue. (The painting is lost now. Missing since 1945. Last place: Private owner near Danzig) A second version by Hasenclever is said to have been destroyed by fire in 1945 in the Leine castle near Hannover.
