AugustineCaldwell. Certain deeds and wills at Salem and East Cambridge havefurnished proof by which these scattered facts could be connected
1 Robert SMITH as early as 1661 was living in that part of Rowley whichafterward became Boxford. It has not been proved whence he came buthe probably was the Robert Smith of Ipswich whose daughter Mary wasborn in that town on October 26, 1658. His name appears infrequentlyon the local records. In 1673 he and five others signed a petition to theGeneral Court praying that the efforts of certain persons who wereendeavoring to free us from Topsfield and lay us to Rowley be frustrated.He took the oath of allegiance in 1678 and in 1680 his name appears onthe records of Rowley as the head of a family. In 1684 Robert's wife,whose name is not given, was a member of the church in Topsfield in fullcommunion. Robert Smith died intestate on August 30, 1693 (Essex WillsVol. 306 p. 114) and his son Samuel was made administrator (Essex WillsVol. 306 p. 74). He left an estate worth L189:7:8
